Living Well Taking Control (LWTC) – a partnership between Westbank charity and Health Exchange – is currently delivering the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NHS DPP) in areas around England including: Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull; County Durham, Dudley, Rochdale, Sefton and St Helens; and Bury.
Client 156 (pictured) has been on the course since October 2016. Here’s what she had to say about it:
“The whole process of the Living Well Taking Control programme has been excellent, I’ve been really committed and learned a lot through the course. I have become increasingly more healthy and active on the way. I’ve been doing a lot more walking which has been a pleasure and my husband has been joining me. By learning different kinds of health benefits through the course, I’ve been very careful and reduced my salt and sugar intake and started using less oil. I’ve stopped frying items of food and I’ve swapped it for baking them instead and I also eat more fruit and vegetables.
[My facilitator] has supported me and encouraged me throughout, she even came to my home to deliver the 8-week review which was brilliant because I had an important call I could not cancel. I will carry on with the changes in my lifestyle and really appreciate the support. Thank you.”Sharon, Client 156’s Living Well Taking Control facilitator, spoke of her progress: “Client 156 has been doing well throughout the course and has picked up a lot of good tips which she’s included in her new lifestyle. Although she is very busy with full-time work and fostering, she’s managed to change things for the better. She’s not afraid to speak her mind and to let me know if she needs my help.”
Another of Sharon’s clients, Client 140, also shared her story: “I’ve been on the Living Well Taking Control Programme since October 2016 and I am now on my 8th week. I’ve really enjoyed the course and Sharon has motivated me to lose weight and be more active. I will continue working towards my goal to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. I’ve had plenty of support as I’ve progressed and made some lovely friends in the group. I realise that I might be borderline diabetic but I don’t wish to develop diabetes. I feel that I now have a lot more energy to do things. Thank you once again Sharon for all your encouragement and support.”
Sharon: “Client 140 has been staying really focused throughout the course and she managed to stay in control of her eating behavior even when she was on holiday. She’s doing very well each week, especially when I take her measurements – there have been changes each time and she’s been really pleased with that. Although she’s retired, she keeps herself busy each day and feels much better for it. She’s been speaking more positively, which I feel has increased her confidence in the group sessions.
It’s been a pleasure working with both clients and I know they will continue to take control of their lifestyle.”
