Living Well Taking Control has today been announced by NHS England as 1 of 5 providers of the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NHS DPP). LWTC will continue to deliver the face to face programme for people at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, with Liva Healthcare providing a digital offer.
Type 2 diabetes is one of the biggest healthcare challenges of our time. Diabetes and its complications cost the NHS over £10 billion every year to treat, with one in six patients in hospital now having diabetes. There is strong evidence that the onset of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed in those at high risk through improved quality of diet, an increase in physical activity and weight reduction.
Partnering for success
LWTC is a Limited Liability Partnership between Birmingham-based social enterprise Health Exchange CIC and Exeter-based charity Westbank Community Health and Social Care. Each organisation has expertise in supporting individuals in establishing new patterns of behaviour to improve their health and wellbeing.
Liva Healthcare has deisgned an innovative digital health platform designed to tackle chronic diseases through changes in lifestyle and behaviour. The programme has been proven to halt and reverse Type 2 diabetes by helping patients change their lifestyle. Its platform supports patients in monitoring and managing their lifestyle with the help of a free, dedicated personal health coach.
LWTC and Liva both participated in previous pilots of the Healthier You programme.
Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme
The Healthier You programme was officially launched in 2016 to support people who are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. It provides guidance on eating healthily, managing weight and being more active. It is a sustained lifestyle change programme, delivered locally, in local settings. Over a quarter of a million people have been referred into the programme so far, with referral from primary care .
New figures show that the 17,000 people who attended most of the healthy living sessions lost an average of 3.4kg, over one kilogram more than originally predicted and a total of 59,000kg.
The programme, which gives advice on dieting, exercise and healthy lifestyle, is being doubled in size over the next few years to treat around 200,000 people annually as part of the NHS Long Term Plan’s renewed focus on prevention.
From July, remote versions of the DPP, which involve wearable technologies and apps to help those at risk of Type 2 Diabetes, will be provided for patients who find it difficult to attend sessions because of work or family commitments.
Recent projections show that the growing number of people with diabetes could result in nearly 39,000 people living with diabetes suffering a heart attack in 2035 and over 50,000 people suffering a stroke.
Professor Jonathan Valabhji, NHS England National Clinical Director of Diabetes and Obesity said:
“Around two thirds of adults and one third of children are now overweight or obese, driving higher and higher rates of Type 2 diabetes that we are now focusing huge efforts to address, as outlined in the NHS Long Term Plan.
“I’m delighted that our work so far in this area has been producing really positive results. This weight loss is promising – and we hope to help many more of those who are at risk of Type 2 diabetes to not get it in the first place.”
Stuart Brown, Service Manager at Living Well Taking Control, said:
“We’re very pleased to be able to continue as provider of the Healthier You Diabetes Prevention Programme, helping those within the most deprived communities across England make lifestyle changes for life. Our continued focus will be in delivering a local service delivered by local people designed to meet the needs of local communities.”
Simon Pickup, UK Managing Director at Liva Healthcare, said:
“Liva’s strong results from the pilot of the digital stream of the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme proves just how important lifestyle intervention is to support those at risk of Type 2 diabetes. Technology facilitates these important lifestyle changes and makes any programme highly scalable.
A close relationship between health coach and patient through our platform can change lives. With our easy-to-use programme, patients will have direct ongoing contact with their personal coach, motivational tools and help from an online support group.”
