CEO Graham Announces His Retirement

Time to move on…

“I am announcing, with some sadness but great optimism and confidence, my decision to step down from my role as CEO at Health Exchange.

How do I reflect on my time at Health Exchange? There are so many people to thank and so many good times to remember. We have taken this business from 23 employees to over 100 and we now turnover £3.2m.  We have weathered the massive changes in health and care commissioning and successfully positioned the business for the growth of accountable care organisations and the NHS Five Year Forward model of operation. We have together achieved so much, changed many thousands of people’s lives and created a strong team of passionate and committed staff;  and for that I will be always be proud.”

After 10 years as CEO of Health Exchange, Graham Beaumont has taken the decision to retire from his position. During his time in post, the company has grown and diversified through successful tendering and excellent service delivery. Despite the dismantlement of the grant funding system for community organisations, Health Exchange has continued to expand, into new services and new geographies and has demonstrated its capacity for innovation and an ability to build new services to address significant challenges in health, particularly prevention and recovery or resilience.

Following Graham’s announcement, we are now seeking an exceptional individual to help lead our organisation through the next phase of our journey.

Health Exchange CIC was established in 2007 to deliver a radically different, community-led model of health promotion – initially serving the multicultural and diverse communities living in Birmingham.

The founding partners, the Heart of Birmingham teaching Primary Care Trust and Birmingham City Council believed that it was only by engaging and recruiting people from those communities, using their understanding of local needs and promoting access to services, would it become possible to provide a more effective approach to lifestyle change, improved mental wellbeing, and disease management.

Health Exchange was established as a social enterprise, a community interest company, to build on the basic model of a trading company that does its business to improve communities and strengthen community infrastructure; an asset-based approach. By functioning as a trading company, with a social purpose, the CIC has been able to weather the hugely varying and challenging commissioning environment in health and public health over the last 10 years. The company has remained lean at its core with a strong community-embedded infrastructure of full-time and part-time staff and volunteers.

Over the last 10 years Health Exchange has grown and diversified through successful tendering and excellent service delivery to a current turnover of over £3.2 million (including subsidiaries).

The business has grown by diversifying both its products and services and expanding into new geographies with existing well-tried and tested products. The business has won significant tenders for stop smoking services, health trainers, long-term conditions self-management and latterly a significant growth of its primary care mental health services through Health Exchange’s membership of the Living Well Consortium. Increasingly, as public health funds have been squeezed, Health Exchange has focused on becoming a “go to” organisation for primary care, through the GP forward view.

The Role

We have achieved much over the last ten years and the re-alignment of health commissioning and planning continues to bring us further tough challenges. It also brings tremendous opportunities to create a growing, sustainable and self-sufficient organisation.

We are determined to cast the net far and wide across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors to find the very best possible candidate for this demanding role at the heart of the health ecosystem.

The highest levels of leadership capability and proven organisational change will help us continue to build an organisation that will be an exemplar of social enterprise performance, innovation and efficiency.

As the CEO you will lead a strong and vibrant “can do” organisation with a committed, motivated and passionate workforce, a reputation for quality and customer service and a commitment to grow in the years ahead. You will be focused on continuous improvement and will be empowered to use novel approaches as you lead the organisation through a complex and ever-changing health and social care landscape, in pursuit of growth and diverse opportunities.

You will supervise and control all strategic and business aspects of the company. You will be the primary officer in the company and responsible for giving strategic direction as well as creating a vision for success.

To thrive as the CEO you must be a prudent manager and an inspiring leader. The ideal candidate will have a business mindset and will be able to see the “big picture” in a variety of settings. You will take actions to enhance the company’s cash flow while keeping the human factor in perspective.
